What are some of the different ways in which we are called to follow in Jesus’ footsteps?
In reading through this passage, how would you define what it means to be “hated by the world”?
What does it mean to be persecuted? Are these two things (hated and persecuted) related? Similar? Totally different?
Have you ever personally experienced either of these two?
What do you think it was about Jesus and his message and his ministry that caused him to be hated by many? (Consider John 14:6 when formulating your thoughts on this).
How did Jesus respond to those who hated him? To those who opposed him? What passages would you go to support your answers to this?
Verse 20 is pretty clear in its assumption that if you are living a consistent Christian life, you will experience some form of contempt in this world. Take a moment for introspection and discuss this statement.
How can you be sure you are experiencing contempt because of Jesus and not because you are being arrogant, obnoxious, insensitive or inappropriate?
