Romans 6:1-14 - Our Union With Christ

  1.  Put the objections of verse 1 and 15 into your own words in as sympathetic a way as possible.  How is the objector responding to what Paul has just said at the end of chapter 5?
  2. Find all the places in verses 1-11 where Paul speaks of the Christian as being united with Christ in some way, so that what happened to him is reckoned to have happened to us.  Are there examples in ordinary life where what happens to someone else is reckoned to have happened to us?
  3. Paul speaks on ‘sin’ not just as something we do, but as a power over us.  Find places in the chapter where Paul speaks in this way.
  4. What is the connection between sin and death (look back at 5:12, 16, 21)?
  5. What two things does Jesus’ resurrection mean for us, according to versus 4,5 and 8?
  6. What does it mean (and not mean) for the Christian to have ‘died to sin’?
  7. What does Paul mean by telling us to ‘count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus’ (v 11)?
  8. What response does Paul call for in verses 12-14?  How is this different from telling people to do their best and turn over a new leaf?
  9. What are the two slaveries on offer (eg. v 16)?  Why do I have to be a slave to anybody?  Why can’t I just serve myself?
  10. How were Christians transferred out of slavery to sin, according to verses 17, 18?
  11. Where do the two slaveries lead (v 19-23)?
  12. How do we experience the power of sin over us?
  13. What members’ (faculties, parts of our humanness) can and ought we to offer to God, and how practically can we do this, both as individuals and as a church?
  14. How does this chapter show us that we are free to offer ourselves to God, and what incentives does it give us actually to offer ourselves, again and again?  How can we encourage one another with these truths and incentives?
