1. If you were a citizen of Ancient Rome, what would be important to you? What would you be pursuing?
2. Why do social media influencers, celebrities and rich people have such big followings? What does it mean to “brand” oneself today?
3. The sermon passage is bookended by Phil 1:27-30 and 2:12-18. How is Paul calling us to live as Christians? What does Paul mean by being of “one mind” and why is it important?
4. What are the things that Paul lists in 2:1 that we have “in Christ”? What building blocks does Paul lay in the foundation of Christian unity in 2:2-4?
5. What in Christ’s life, work and character does Paul want us to see as an example for us in 2:5-11? What are your favourite accounts in the Gospels that amplify and illuminate these verses for you?
6. Why is Christ more than just an example for us? How has His resurrection changed you? How significant is His exaltation for us?
7. Why would Paul see submission, suffering and service as privileges? Do you share his view? How did Paul’s life show that he was not sharing empty words and empty promises?
8. Why is the Spirit-mindedness and Christ-centeredness that Paul describes in these passages so important for our growth in faith and maturity? Why can we not just grow on our own? From where and from whom do you seek help to grow and mature?
