1. What do you like to do on Sundays? Do you feel refreshed and recharged afterwards? If you must work on a Sunday, is there a day of the week you prefer to set aside from your vocation?

2. How and why would a woman, disfigured and crippled by ailment, be viewed in Israel at Jesus’ time?

3. What do you find notable about the sequence of events in this healing? What was Jesus doing right before? Was healing even asked for?

4. Why would the synagogue leader address the crowd and not Jesus? How did the leader justify himself? Where in scripture is healing on the Sabbath prohibited?

5. Read John 5:14-18; 7:20-24. Why would Israel’s religious leaders be so outraged about healing on the Sabbath, enough to kill Jesus?

6. How did Jesus respond to the leaders and people in the passages in Luke and John? How did He exhibit mercy and grace in His response to them? How did they respond?

7. When we are rebuked or convicted by Scripture, how should we respond? When we are rebuked or convicted by a fellow Christian, how should we respond? How do we often respond?

8. What did the healing on the Sabbath show about the character of God? How does the healing point to the Gospel? What does the Sabbath foreshadow for the people of God? (See Hebrews 4:6-10.)

9. How can we apply this passage to our prayer and action? What should we be looking for and doing?
