Romans 16:25-27 - What is the Gospel?

11/2/2020

     1.   What is something or someone that you have attached yourself to so strongly that you refer to it or them as “my” or “we”? For example, when speaking about the Winnipeg Jets, many fans refer to the team in ways like, “We had a great game last night.” or “I can’t believe we traded them.”

     2.  In regards to Paul calling it "my gospel" - why does he refer to it that way?

     3.  Paul called it “my gospel” in part to differentiate it from other false gospels being preached. What false gospels are out there today that you are aware of?

    4.  These verses are Paul's brief summary of the gospel - how would you summarize the gospel?

    5.  Verse 25 - "strengthened you" - what does this mean? In what ways has the gospel transformed you? How are you different because of the gospel?

    6.  Verse 26 says the gospel has been made known to all nations in order to bring about obedience to the faith. How is God calling you to be obedient? In what areas?

    7.  How has Roman’s moved you more deeply to give all the glory to God?

  1. How many of the friends you made in your high school and young adult years do you still keep in touch with? Do you know where most of them live today?
  2. What characteristics do you notice in the people Paul greets?
  3. Why does Paul need to add the warning of verses 17-20? What is going wrong and how are they to guard against it?
  4. What encouragement does Paul give them in verse 20? How does Genesis 3:15 help us to understand this? (Who does the crushing and under whose feet? Can you explain this?)
  5. How have you been motivated to love others more radically as a result of this passage? In what practical ways?

Romans 15:14-21  The Heart of a Missionary

  1. Have you ever received a particularly meaningful letter? What was it about the letter that made it so meaningful? (If it was a letter from a previous boyfriend or girlfriend maybe just leave that one out and think about a different one:)
  2. What have you learned about Paul since going through Romans that you didn’t notice or know before? How would you describe this author who’s letter we have been going through for the last few months?
  3. In verse 16, Paul talks about the Gentiles bringing an offering that may be acceptable. Paul describes himself as being in their priestly service. Thinking back to the sermon from Sunday, what kind of an offering were they giving and why is that significant? (This is referring to the two basic types of Old Testament offerings; sin offerings and thanksgiving offerings.)
  4. How does that understanding of “thanksgiving offerings” bring clarity to Romans 12:1 where we are told to be “living sacrifices”?
  5. In verse 18, Paul mentions that he brought the Gentiles to obedience through his word and deed. How does that bring clarity to how we are called to live missional lives?
  6. What does Paul ask them to pray for him in verse 30-33?
  7. How could you pray for one another in your missional living this week?

Romans 15:1-13  Abounding in Hope

10/11/2020

  1. When you were a little kid, did you ever think about what life would be like in the year 2000? What did you imagine? Were you hopeful for the future?
  2. As you look out and observe the people around you, where do most people look to find hope? Do you find that most people are generally hopeful and optimistic?
  3. According to verses 1-3, in what ways are you living to please yourself? In what ways are you living to please your neighbour?
  4. How do the three truths about Scripture in 15:4 (entirely applicable today, centered on Christ, produces hope) excite you about reading and shape the way you approach the bible?
  5. Verse 13 tells us that abounding in hope comes in your belief. When you believe, the God of hope fills you with all joy and peace. How can you walk in that hope this week?
  6. How can you help someone else to walk in that hope this week?

Romans 14:13-23 In This Way

10/4/2020

  1. Read through Romans 14:13-23 again
  2. According to Paul, who is actually right in their disagreements about what to eat? What is it that makes the other side weak?
  3. How might the ‘strong in faith’ have caused the ‘weak in faith’ to stumble?
  4. How is the consequence of causing the ‘weak’ to stumble described in verses 15 and 20?
  5. Paul lays out 3 things which the kingdom of heaven is built on and two that it isn’t built on. Can you identify each? What is the fundamental difference between these categories?
  6. Define righteousness, peace, and joy. Where do these things come from? Put your heads together and try to define them and their source from other places in scripture.
  7. What does Paul mean when he says that, ‘everything that does not come from faith is sin’ (14:23)?

Romans 14:1-12 Unity and Diversity

9/28/2020

  1. This passage talks about one issue (passing judgment on one another) with Paul giving two examples of how the issue is being propagated. The two issues are Sabbath observance and the Jewish dietary law. What was Sunday like for you growing up? How has that day changed for you over the years?
  2. Do you tend to view all matters as being disputable (lots of grey areas) or do you more naturally view no matter as being disputable (everything is black and white)?
  3. This question takes some self awareness - Can you see any area in which you may be a weaker believer? Remember, weaker doesn’t mean immature.
  4. If you consider yourself a “stronger believer” in a particular matter, what is your priority: enjoying your freedom or giving it up to serve another Christian?
  5. What argument does Paul give for them to accept one another in verse 1-3? What about in verse 4?
  6. How does the truth that we will all stand before God’s judgement affect you?

Romans 13:8-14 Wake Up!

9/21/2020

  1. How does the command to love our neighbour help us to understand how to put the commandments into practice?
  2. If love fulfills the law, how does that change the way you view the law and the commands?
  3. In what area of life has Romans 13 challenged you to wake up in? Are there things in your life that “put you to sleep”?
  4. How would your life look different this week if you lived as though the “day of salvation was near”?
  5. In what ways can you practically “put on Christ” this week so that you make no provision for the flesh?

Romans 13:1-7  Living As Citizens

9/13/2020

Romans 13:1-7 Living as CitizensAs we have talked about in our sermons, Romans 12 marks a shift in the book of Romans. Chapters 1-11 laid the foundation and theology of the Gospel. Beginning in chapter 12, Paul starts to teach us how we are now to live in light of that knowledge. The following questions take a look at Paul’s teaching from chapter 12 - 13:7.

  1. We talked about how the understanding of the gospel gives us a new way of seeing everything; it has changed our perspective on life and eternity. How have these verses from Romans 12:1-8 changed the way you think of yourself?
  2. How have these verses changed the way you view your relationships in the body of Christ?
  3. How have these verses changed the way you use your gifts in and for your church?
  4. How have the verses from 13:1-7 changed the way you view authority and government?
  5. In Romans 12:18, Paul says; “As far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” What challenge is there for you in this verse and in this thought that Paul has laid out throughout this chapter?
