John 1:12-13  Born of God

12/7/2020

  1. Pastor Matt shared how he enjoyed growing up in a small town. Where did you grow up? What did you like about your “hometown” and growing up there or what did you not like about it?
  2. How do you think it would have felt to not be welcome in your hometown?
  3. Read Ezekiel 36:25-27 as a group. What is the evidence of a heart of flesh in your life? How has God been transforming you? Or how have you seen God transforming the other members of your group?
  4. What areas do you keep the doors closed and blinds down so as to keep the light from coming in? What is holding you back? What would be the first step to opening that door or those blinds to let the light come in?

John 1:1-11 - Jesus: The Light of the World

11/29/2020

1. Is there a “light wars” going on in your home? And if so, who wins?

2. Do you have a favorite decoration? If so, why is it so special?

3. How does light affect you? Do you notice when we have a stretch of dark, cloudy days? Do you do anything to combat that?

4. Light is a major theme in the book of John and the bible in general. How many times do you see this word in the first chapter?

5. The first few verses of John create an obvious connection to Genesis creation. Why does John do this? What does this do to our understanding of Jesus as the Word?

6. What does it mean that Jesus’ life is light? And does this connect to Genesis creation?

7. Our world is described as being “darkness” in verse 5. What does this mean? Is this something you’ve observed?

8. What does it mean that the “darkness” was not able to overcome the light? The word “overcome” is also translated as “comprehend”. Both meanings seem to be in view. What kind of hope can that bring you and others?

9. This passage gives us a glimpse into the relationship of the Trinity and the perfection of that relationship. It was out of abundance that the Godhead invites us into relationship, not out of need. How does this bring perspective to the incarnation?

10. In John's day, philosophers said that if you aligned your life with the Logos (the Word), life would go well; you would find meaning, purpose and fulfillment. Then John came along and said that the Logos (the Word) was a person. This revolutionized everything. Has your life been revolutionized by this truth? In what ways?

Hebrews 1 & 2 - Christ is All

11/22/2020

1. We are told that God spoke to us in many times and in various ways. How does the audience you are communicating to influence the way in which you communicate? Do you communicate the same way to a neighbour as you would to your spouse or your children or your enemy? Why is that?

2. In the past God spoke in various ways and now he has spoken to us through his Son. What does this mean to you? Why has God done this? Was there something wrong with the way He spoke in the past? Did it need updating?

3. In what ways has God spoken? How does He speak to you today?

4. What does it mean that Christ is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature?

5. What does it mean that He upholds the universe? How did Pastor Jeremy’s illustration of the sheer size of the universe make you think about this?

6. What impact should it have on our lives knowing that Jesus actually upholds everything by His power?

7. In Hebrews 2:1 it says we are to pay close attention to what we have heard lest we drift from it. Pastor Jeremy mentioned that term “close attention” can be better translated as “furiously obsessed”. What is it that we are to become furiously obsessed with? How can you work towards this and in what ways might you drift from it (especially considering our current situation)?

Colossians 1 - The Fullness of Christ

11/15/2020

  1. Has covid caused you to start any new habits, either positive or negative?
  2. On Sunday we talked about how Paul used his time very productively during his Roman house arrest; do you find it difficult to use your time productively these days?
  3. It seems to me that movies or series have three big themes. Are your favorite movies filled with grand adventures? Grand relationships? Or Grand tasks (like the small guys beating the odds and winning over the giant enemy)? Or a combination of these three?
  4. How does the story of the incarnation blow all three of these grand themes out of the water? Go through them one by one. What is it that compels us about that?
  5. Did you know that Jolly Old St. Nic. was at the Council of Nicea?
  6. If Jesus is God, this means full surrender for us. Not one area of our life should we leave untouched by Jesus. Is this an issue that you struggle with? Are there (or have there been) areas of your life that you have wanted him to be hands off with?
  7. Does embarking on Jesus’ grand adventure (an adventure with a sure ending) scare you or excite you? What are some practical ways we enter into the journey that Christ came to begin?
  8. Have you ever sacrificed something for a greater benefit? That benefit could have been for you or for someone else. Was it worth it? Did you even consider it a sacrifice by the end?
  9. Read Mark 10:28-30 again. Where is the sacrifice and where is the joy in what Jesus says here?

Philippians 2:5-12  From Humility to Exaltation

11/8/2020

  1. Sometimes we can discover what a church's problems were by reading between the lines. What problem was present in the church at Philippi? (If no one can think of anything, point them to chapter 4:2-7) Why would this be a problem serious enough for Paul to confront in his letter to them?
  2. If Jesus was in very nature God, why does verse 6 talk about “grasping at equality” with God?
  3. In what sense did Jesus “empty” himself? Why did he need to empty himself of anything in order to become human?
  4. When we read through the gospels, we probably have a tendency to view Jesus as being either more divine or more human. Which do you lean towards?
  5. Have you ever been motivated by selfish ambition or vain conceit?
  6. Why do we find it so hard to think of others as better than ourselves?
  7. We are called to have the “mind” of Christ. How is this different than simply following Jesus’ example?
  8. How does Christ’s example of humility and obedience speak to your life circumstances this week?
